SUMMARY:Active Bystander Intervention Training
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by DC Peace Team: www.dcpeaceteam.com \nSaturday\, July 24th 10am-3pm (EST) with one hour break from 12-1pm.\nONLINE: Zoom link shared after you complete registration in the confirmation message window which pops up after you complete this form and emailed to you about 24 hrs. before the session\n(Contact Eli: esm52@georgetown.edu) \nAn active bystander training teaches effective skills for assessing\, de-escalating\, and diffusing a problematic situation\, such as intimidation\, harassment\, abuse\, physical violence\, etc. Active bystander training focuses on a bystander observing a problematic situation and determining if and how to intervene. This is distinct from self-assertion training that teaches how to de-escalate and diffuse unwanted attention when you are being harassed or attacked. An active bystander is someone who not only witnesses a situation\, but takes steps to speak up or step in to keep a situation from escalating or to disrupt a problematic situation. \nThis is an interactive\, participatory\, beginner’s workshop designed for those that may have none to little prior studies of bystander intervention. \n***************************** \nPayment is requested on a sliding scale. Please consider $45-$100 to help us continue this work and better serve the community. No one will be turned away for lack of payment and we welcome you either way. \nFor those who can\, please submit payment today– https://dcpeaceteam.com/donate/; or checks can be written out to DC Peace Team and mailed to Eli McCarthy\, 7305 Baylor Ave. College Park\, MD 20740. \nFor questions contact Eli McCarthy at esm52@georgetown.edu. \nFacilitators:\nEli S. McCarthy\, Ph.D. (he/his) is a co-founder of the DC Peace Team and has led numerous trainings. He also teaches at Georgetown University in Justice and Peace Studies. Eli has published a book called “A Just Peace Ethic Primer: Building Sustainable Peace and Breaking Cycles of Violence” (2020) along with numerous journal articles such as “Truth and Reconciliation Commissions: Toward a More Just U.S. Society\,” and “Will You Really Protect Us Without a Gun?: Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping in the U.S.” He has been formed by multiple trips to Haiti working with the poor\, working with the homeless in Boston and DC\, and monitoring the Palestinian Elections in 2006 with the Nonviolent Peaceforce. SUMMARY:WORKING FOR PEACE TO END TIMES OF WAR
DESCRIPTION:During the era of two world wars on this planet\, many groups advocated for peace.  The Biosophical Institute (BI) was one such group. \n \n\nIn 1936 BI founder Dr. Frederick Kettner published  an essay on “The Need for a Secretary of Peace” and presented to the First Inter-American Peace conference in Buenos Aires\, Argentina a “Secretary of Peace Plan” with an endorsing petition signed by 41\,000 Americans.\nIn 1939 the Biosophical Institute sponsored a peace film at the New York World’s Fair.\n\nFrom 1955-1958 Dr. Kettner wrote a series of articles about a Secretary of Peace and peace education\, presented lectures and corresponded with the U.S. State Department about establishing the First Peace University in the US.\n\n\n\nThis is just some of the Biosophical Institute’s historical peacebuilding work which continues to this day.  The Biosophical Institute’s mission is to cultivate a community and culture of peace encompassing life wisdom and deep relationships through character and peace education.\n\nPlease join the call on 7/21/21 at 5 pm PDT/ 8 pm EDT to learn more from the Institute’s Executive Director Louis Ensel.  Join us online or by phone:  https://zoom.us/j/464735321 or by phone (US: +1 929 436 2866  or +1 669 900 6833).  Meeting ID: 464 735 321 (no passcode required). \nLouis Ensel brings to the BI over 20 years in non-profit management from agency and community relations to Associate Director for a regional chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.  He has worked in varied community and public environments from foodbanking to diversity education\, mediation to neighborhood healing through consensus building. \nThe Department of Peacebuilding Campaign owes a debt of gratitude to the BI as we pay it forward with our work to cultivate a culture of peace and create a cabinet-level Department of Peacebuilding (DoP) in the U.S. government.  Peacebuilding is our history and our future.  We continue commemorating introduction of DoP legislation in Congress on 7/11/21 and advocating for its creation.

SUMMARY:Redistricting in Ohio: the Fight for Fair Maps
DESCRIPTION:Join Green Umbrella\, the Ohio Environmental Council\, and democracy advocates across Ohio in the fight for Fair Maps in 2021. Every community map and individual story matters in the fight for equal districts. \nThe OEC Democracy Team will run an interactive workshop\,\nTuesday\, July 20th\, starting promptly at 6:00pm.\nWe’ll be exploring community mapmaking\, showcasing how you can describe your geographic space in support of Ohio’s redistricting process. Attendees will use an online tool\, DistrictR\, to define their community boundaries\, institutions\, assets\, and issues. Community maps inform the district creation process and help Mapmakers identify equable locations for boundaries based on geographic and community interests\, rather than partisan interests. \nIn-person registration will be capped at 40 people at Green Umbrella’s Offices\, 5030 Oaklawn Drive\, Cincinnati. \nYou are also able to join virtually via ZOOM \nRegister Here for this FREE event at bit.ly/greenmaps2021

SUMMARY:Laudato Si' and the U.S. Catholic Church: A Conference Series on Our Common Home
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Creighton University and Catholic Climate Covenant \n“Laudato Si’ and the U.S. Catholic Church: A Conference Series on Our Common Home” is a biennial conference series to convene\, equip\, and inspire Catholics who can more deeply integrate Laudato Si’ and its climate change teaching into the U.S. Church. \nThe first convening was held at Creighton in June 2019 and the presentations were published in the Journal of Moral Theology. The second gathering will be held virtually July 13-15\, 2021. In partnership with Creighton\, the 2021 conference expresses Catholic Climate Covenant’s leading role coordinating U.S. Catholic enactment of the Vatican “Laudato Si’ Action Platform.” \nThe 2021 conference will open on July 13 with a keynote event featuring His Eminence Blase Cardinal Cupich\, Archbishop of Chicago\, and Maureen Day\, PhD\, Assistant Professor of Religion and Society at the Franciscan School of Theology. The event\, “A Bold Embrace of Laudato Si’ By The U.S. Catholic Church\,” will assess why the U.S. Catholic response to Laudato Si’ has not been commensurate with the urgency and gravity of the climate crisis. \nOn July 14-15\, the conference will feature interactive breakout sessions facilitated by teams of ministry leaders working to more faithfully incorporate Laudato Si’ into eight areas of the U.S. Catholic Church: \n\nAdvocacy\nColleges/Universities\nCommunications/Media\nCreation Care Teams (especially at parishes and dioceses)\nEnvironmental Justice\nPreaching for Creation Care\nParochial School Education\nYouth & Young Adults\n\nEach ministry leadership team will share the strategies\, plans\, and resources being developed with members of their working group. Presentations will be followed by discussion with conference participants. \nThe conference will conclude on July 15 with a closing address by Sister Ilia Delio\, OSF\, PhD\, Josephine C. Connelly Endowed Chair in Theology at Villanova University. The address\, “Can the Earth Be Healed? Insights from Teilhard de Chardin\, SJ\,” will consider Catholic spiritual and theological insights that can enliven a more faithful commitment to care for our common home. \nThe 2021 virtual gathering will be free and open to the public but registration is required. At the time of registration\, attendees are encouraged to make a freewill donation to help offset conference costs that include Spanish language translations.

SUMMARY:Reducing Single Use Plastics (SUPs)
DESCRIPTION:Green Umbrella’s Faith Communities Go Green Team invites you to a webinar on Reducing Single Use Plastics (SUPs) \nDATE: June  29\, 2021  \nTIME: 7:00-8:00pm \nDESCRIPTION:  \nLearn some practical alternatives to using Single Use Plastic (aka SUPs) in your home or faith community. \nWHY: \nOveruse of plastics harms creation – both the natural world and human health. \nWe know that the production of plastic through “fracking” and “cracker plants” pollutes the air\, water\, and land in our region and threatens our health. \nWe also know that the disposal of plastics contaminates our environment and the beauty of creation. \nSo what’s an ordinary\, conscientious person to do? Of course we can recycle some plastic\, and it’s better to recycle plastic when possible than to just throw it in the garbage or litter the ground and water…BUT less than 10% of plastics get recycled. \nSOLUTION: \nIt’s much better to reduce buying and using plastic which decreases the demand for plastic and the amount needing to be recycled. \nHOW: \n\nLearn 7 lifestyle changes to reduce your need for plastic products\nLearn 10 substitutes for plastic packaging\nLearn what plastics can be recycled and what cannot\nEducate yourself further and multiply your efforts by becoming involved\nin the July Eco-Challenge!\n\nRegister for the free webinar and then join us for the Plastic Free EcoChallenge throughout the month of July! \nLearn more about the Faith Communities Go Green team at https://greenumbrella.org/faith
