SUMMARY:Different Trains: A Special Performance at Union Terminal
DESCRIPTION:Join us in commemorating the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center’s third anniversary at Union Terminal with a special performance of American Jewish composer Steve Reich’s “Different Trains.” \nAs a child during World War II\, Steve Reich rode trains between his divorced parents in New York and Los Angeles. Later in his life\, he realized that had he been in Europe\, he would have been on very “Different Trains\,” those leading to extermination camps. The piece highlights the intersections of history by combining the recorded voices of Holocaust survivors\, American train porters\, and train sounds\, with the playing of the string quartet\, to create a powerful\, moving experience\, and one uniquely appropriate for performance at the Holocaust & Humanity Center at Union Terminal. \nThis performance by 4-Way\, Cincinnati’s String quartet\, will also include African-American composer Rhiannon Giddens’ song\, “At the Purchaser’s Option.” The two pieces evoke memories of a tragic past filled with oppression and dehumanization\, experienced by Jews during the Holocaust and African Americans during slavery. At the same time both reflect on humanity’s struggle for survival and dignity in the darkest hour. \nRegister at the event website.

SUMMARY:Faith Sharing Series: Saivism
DESCRIPTION:Śaivism is the precursor of the many-faceted religion now termed Hinduism. Scholars trace the roots of Śiva worship back more than 8\,000 years to the advanced Indus Valley civilization. Śaivism’s grandeur and beauty are found in a practical culture\, an enlightened view of humans’ place in the universe and a profound system of temple mysticism and siddha yoga. \nJoin us in welcoming Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami. Born in Berkeley\, California\, on October 15\, 1942\, Bodhinatha began studying Vedanta and meditation in 1960\, soon developing a deep interest in monastic life. He met Sivaya Subramuniyaswami\, affectionately known as Gurudeva\, in 1964 and joined his monastery in 1965. In March\, 1972\, he received sannyas diksha in a powerful ceremony at which a number of monastics were initiated by Gurudeva at his Sri Subramuniya Ashram in Alaveddy\, Sri Lanka. At the time of Gurudeva’s transition\, maha samadhi\, in 2001 he was installed as Guru Mahasannidhanam of Kauai Aadheenam and the 163rd preceptor of the Kailasa Parampara. Bodhinatha is the current spiritual head of Saiva Siddhanta Church and Himalayan Academy and chairman of Hindu Heritage Endowment. As publisher of Hinduism Today magazine\, he carries forward Gurudeva’s vision to inform\, strengthen and connect Hindus around the world. He travels frequently to be with and initiate members\, to give lectures to Hindu groups\, attend temple festivals and events and to oversee the mission in other nations. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89182703399?pwd=clFLUm9XR1VmUXc2VHA4eVRCYXdvQT09

SUMMARY:An Evening with Holocaust Survivor Eva Schloss
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 26\, 2022 | 7:00 PM | Holocaust & Humanity Center \nOn the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, survivor Eva Schloss will share her powerful story live in Reakirt Auditorium to commemorate the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center’s third anniversary at Union Terminal. \nBorn Eva Geiringer in Vienna\, Austria\, Eva and her family fled to the Netherlands after Germany annexed Austria in 1938. They were neighbors of Anne Frank’s family during their time in Amsterdam. After the Nazis occupied the Netherlands\, Eva and her family went into hiding. The family was later betrayed and sent to Westerbork Concentration Camp and then to Auschwitz II-Birkenau. \nAfter the war\, Eva and her mother moved back to Amsterdam and reconnected with Otto Frank\, whom her mother married — making Eva Anne Frank’s posthumous stepsister. \nLearn more about Eva’s story during this intimate conversation with her on January 26. HHC will also unveil Eva’s virtual intelligence testimony in our newest exhibit\, Dimensions in Testimony. Using specialized recording and display technologies and next-generation natural language processing\, DIMENSIONS IN TESTIMONY\, allows visitors to ask two-dimensional displays of Holocaust survivors questions and receive responses in real time. \nThis free event is hosted in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center. \nRegistration required. Visit website for details.

SUMMARY:Science & Nonduality
DESCRIPTION:Are science and nonduality compatible? According to the conventional modern scientific worldview\, reality consists of a physical universe composed of energy and matter behaving according to objective physical laws. In contrast\, the mystics from the world’s major religious traditions teach that reality is ultimately nondual\, i.e.\, that all distinctions are imaginary\, including the distinction between subject and object\, consciousness and universe. Thus\, nonduality would appear to undermine the existence of an objective physical world\, independent of consciousness. Where does this leave science\, and the objective world? Is it possible to reconcile science and nonduality? Join us for an exploration of this question and a possible resolution to this apparent conflict. \nTom McFarlane is a teacher and board member at the Center for Sacred Sciences\, a non-profit spiritual organization whose mission is to support spiritual practitioners following the teachings of the mystics of the world’s major religious traditions and to help foster the creation of a new worldview in which spiritual and scientific truths can be seen as complementary views of the same underlying reality. \nTom has a BS in physics from Stanford University\, an MS in mathematics from the University of Washington\, and an MA in philosophy and religion from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is also the author of Einstein and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings (Ulysses Press\, 2000)\, a collection of parallel quotes from mystics and physicists.
