SUMMARY:Using the Social Change Map to Counter Anti-Muslim Discrimination (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Each of us can contribute to our social change ecosystems by clarifying our shared values and mapping our roles. This workshop\, facilitated by Deepa Iyer\, Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives at Building Movement Project\, is designed for those at every stage of their individual and organizational journeys towards justice\, equity and solidarity. It introduces an ecosystems framework that includes ten roles that many of us play in service of our social change values. We will apply this framework to the work of countering anti-Muslim discrimination. \nThe Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign’s multifaith coalition was founded on the notion that anti-Muslim discrimination is not just a “Muslim issue” but a problem that impacts us all. So where do I begin and what is my role in making change on this issue? What roles do other individuals and groups play? \nThis virtual event will not be livestreamed. Registration is required. Click HERE to register. Participants will be automatically be entered in a raffle to receive a free copy of Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection \nDeepa Iyer is a South Asian American writer\, strategist\, and lawyer. Her work is rooted in Asian American\, South Asian\, Muslim\, and Arab communities where she spent fifteen years in policy advocacy and coalition building in the wake of the September 11th attacks and ensuing backlash. Currently\, Deepa leads projects on solidarity and social movements at the Building Movement Project\, a national nonprofit organization that catalyzes social change through research\, strategic partnerships\, and resources for movements and nonprofits. Deepa’s first book\, We Too Sing America: South Asian\, Arab\, Muslim\, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future (The New Press\, 2015)\, chronicles community-based histories in the wake of 9/11 and received a 2016 American Book Award. Deepa’s most recent book (2022)\, a guide based on the social change ecosystem map that she created\, is called Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection.

SUMMARY:FCGG Book Club: Braiding Sweetgrass
DESCRIPTION:Discussion facilitated by Janelle Allen \nLive on Zoom: Register Here \nBook:\nBraiding Sweetgrass\, by Robin Wall Kimmerer \nAs a botanist\, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific\, as sacred as it is historical\, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert). \nDrawing on her life as an indigenous scientist\, and as a woman\, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod\, strawberries and squash\, salamanders\, algae\, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons\, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today\, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth and learn to give our own gifts in return. \nThis beautifully written and inspiring book is back by popular request. Make new friends as you join us in meaningful discussion. \nLive on Zoom: Register Here

SUMMARY:IJPC Canvas for Affordable Housing (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:IJPC supports Cincinnati Action for Housing Now’s initiative for affordable housing and we need your help to get it on the November ballot. Join us this Saturday! \nThe day will include a brief training on how to collect signatures for the ballot initiative\, and then teams of two will go to Vine St\, Findlay Market\, and City Flea in Washington Park to talk to Cincinnati voters about how we can fund more affordable housing in the city. Lunch will be provided. Can’t stay the whole time? No problem – show up when you can. \nThe ballot measure would restore our earned income tax to its 2020 levels in order to provide a dedicated funding stream to develop housing for the most vulnerable. While there is some promising affordable housing development happening in Cincinnati\, very few of those units will serve those living <30% of the Area Median Income (<$18\,150/person). The .3% increase will result in $40-50 million per year dedicated to those who need it most. \nIJPC Canvass for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund\nSaturday\, May 13\n10:30 AM – 1:00 PM\nBuddy’s Place (Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine)\n1300 Vine Street\, Cincinnati\, OH 45202 \nParking suggestion: Mercer Garage or Washington Park \nSign up here!
