SUMMARY:Extremism: How We Got Here
DESCRIPTION:John Judis and Dr. Gary P. Zola\nIn partnership with The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives \n\n\nEvents including the violent storming of the US Capitol and the white nationalist march in Charlottesville have exposed how extreme polarization creates fertile ground for violent extremism. This has led to political gridlock and an erosion of our democracy. Join author and journalist John Judis\, whose brand new book\, The Politics of Our Time: Populism\, Nationalism\, Socialism\, has been referred to as “essential reading” by the Washington Post. Judis will be in conversation with Dr. Gary P. Zola\, executive director of The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives about the history of populism and nationalism in America and how these two political ideologies have fostered both white supremacy and violent extremism. This event will be held on March 12th. Click here to view the event page.

SUMMARY:Too Much & Never Enough: Climate Change & Water Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:National and international security\, stability\, and prosperity will face novel challenges in the coming decades. The rivalry between the “great powers” (U.S.\, China\, and Russia)\, as well as between regional states\, will remain a feature of 21st Century international relations. But novel transnational issues like climate change and water insecurity will establish a new and crucial context in which rivalries between states play out. \nJoining us to talk about these new challenges is Ambassador (ret.) Kenneth C. Brill. Brill was a career Foreign Service Officer whose overseas posts were in Africa\, the Middle East\, South Asia\, and Europe. His domestic assignments included African and Middle Eastern issues\, acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES)\, and staff jobs for senior State Department policy officials. \nBrill also served as Ambassador to Cyprus for President Clinton and Ambassador to the IAEA and the UN Office in Vienna for President George W. Bush.In his final Foreign Service assignment\, he was asked by the first Director of National Intelligence\, John Negroponte\, to establish and lead the U.S. National Counterproliferation Center\, an organization providing strategic leadership to the U.S. Intelligence Community in countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and preventing WMD terrorism. After retiring from the Foreign Service he has worked with non-partisan NGOs in various capacities on issues ranging from nuclear security and strengthening America’s diplomacy to fragile states and climate change. \nIn this live webinar event\, Ambassador (ret.) Kenneth C. Brill will discuss: \n\nHow is climate change is producing water insecurity?\nWhat are the various forms that water insecurity can take?\nWhat regions globally are most prone to experiencing water insecurity?\nWhat are the long term implications of growing water insecurity?\nHow are these issues are being addressed currently?\nWhat more can be done to manage water-related challenges to stability and prosperity?

SUMMARY:Women as Ritual Experts in Ancient Israel with Dr. Carol Meyers
DESCRIPTION:Who were the most important religious figures in ancient Israel? Most people would probably say that the priests were. But they would be wrong. The main arena of religious life for most people in the biblical period was not the Jerusalem temple nor a regional shrine. Rather\, it was the family household\, and women were major figures in household religious activities. Those activities are largely invisible in the Bible with its focus on the priesthood and sacrifice. However\, the use of an array of archaeological materials—and also some carefully selected and fascinating ethnographic data—can reveal many aspects of women’s household religious culture and its meaning for the lives of ordinary ancient Israelites. Dr. Meyers will begin with some comments about feminist biblical hermeneutics and then give this presentation as an example of one kind of feminist biblical interpretation. This event will be offered by the Interfaith Center at Miami University on March 10th. See event page here.

SUMMARY:Infertility in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:Kristine Henriksen Garroway\, Ph.D.\, Visiting Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible\, HUC/Los Angeles \nThrough biblical and ancient texts and archaeological finds\, explore the reality of infertility as experienced in antiquity by many women and the ways in which they faced this difficult hurdle. While the methods employed to undo infertility might be surprising to the contemporary audience\, the pain and struggles faced by ancient women still find resonance today. \nPresented in partnership with Lilith magazine.

SUMMARY:Infertility in the Ancient World

SUMMARY:Immigrant Voices Panel
DESCRIPTION:This event will be streamed live on the Youtube Channel for the Interfaith Center at Miami University. Please follow and subscribe to our channel by clicking on the following link- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0pq08p9H2y0IrqtVyAUUWQ \nStories are a fundamental component to the human experience. Creating space for ourselves\, and others\, to share our journeys\, not only validates our shared experiences\, but reminds us that we all have inherent value. We matter. Stories serve as both windows\, and mirrors\, to the human experience. They can cultivate empathy and compassion in a world where it is so easy to become desensitized to the suffering of others. This panel aims to use the power of story to shed light on the injustice and xenophobia that the immigrant community has faced in the past year and still continues to face currently. It is part of a larger programming initiative\, called the Divergent Immigrant Experiences\, founded by the Interfaith Center’s Student Liaison\, Priyana Kalita\, which creates space every month to highlight unique immigrant voices and experiences. \nThis program will be co-sponsored by Start the Wave and URI North America. \nPanelists include:\nDr. Sofia Khan (She/Her) is a local physician and a mother of five children. She moved to Greater KC from NYC over 23 years ago. She is a community activist and an Interfaith Leader involved in numerous charity projects for over 15 years. She is the founder for KC for Refugees\, a non faith based community alliance\, helping locally resettled area refugees. Her non-profit advocates for refugee resettlement and provides community education on refugee-related topics. Besides providing support\, it also helps build bridges between these families and the community. \nRico Ocampo (He/Him) who was born in Zacatepetl\, Mexico and immigrated to the United States in 1992. He is an undocumented/DACAmented community organizer and activist. He has engaged in local\, statewide\, and national advocacy efforts to advance systemic change for homeless youth\, immigrant communities\, and underrepresented youth color. He currently serves as the Director for the Anytown Las Vegas\, the longest running antiracist youth program in the state of Nevada. In addition\, Rico also serves as the Youth Organizer for Make the Road Nevada\, a non-profit organization that works with Latinx and working-class communities of color through policy innovation and transformative education. \nKaMani (All pronouns with respect) who is a South Asian (teluGAY) gender queer bearded drag artist from Washington DC transcends western drag expectations by their performance repertoire and their aesthetic senses. #telugay \nEsther María Claros Berlioz (She/Her) who earned her Ph.D. from Miami University and explores the intersections of immigration\, schooling\, and education. Having emigrated to the United States 17 years\, her work centers the experiences of youth who’ve emigrated from the northernmost countries of the Central American isthmus and the impact immigration law\, policy\, and enforcement has on them and their families. \nPriyana Kalita (She/They) who is a student-athlete from India who plays Women’s tennis for Miami University. Priyana is double majoring in Sport Leadership and Management with a concentration in coaching and Women\, Gender and Sexuality studies. She was inducted in the Theta Alpha Kappa National Society for Religion and Theology studies for her work with the Trans community in sex work in India last year. When researching the topic\, she got to learn about a lot of things related to Buddhism and Hinduism specifically which cultivated a desire to learn more about various other religions and religious practices. She hopes her internship at the Interfaith Center will allow her to learn about real experiences of people from various religions and faith traditions from all over the world.

SUMMARY:Birth\, Sickness\, Aging\, Death and Meditation with Aruni Marapane
DESCRIPTION:Meditation is one of greatest art of life\, perhaps the greatest. One can possibly learn from one self\, that is the beauty of it. It’s about observing yourself\, you learn about your own self\, how mind and body is interactive and interdependent. With correct mindfulness you can meditate\, in any situation you are in all day long. \nMeditation is for me is like a huge “umbrella”. It covers a vast area in every aspect of life\, physically\, emotionally\, mentally and spiritually. You can take this “umbrella” to protect you from any kind of weather. Its flexible\, adaptable\, adoptable yet a beautiful aid which gives shelter\, security\, comfort\, clear comprehension and wisdom. As I see\, we are all seekers. Through out our lives we all seek some thing in our lives mental or otherwise. The four questions I always ask are\, \nWhat is meditation?\nWhy we want meditate?\nWhat is the use if meditation?\nWhere does it gets you? \nSo\, with so much love and compassion in my heart\, I would like to invite you to have a journey with me together\, have an open discussion\, investigation\, inquiry to look in to universal divine qualities such as loving kindness\, compassion\, joy and equanimity. By doing so let’s look at our human conditioning birth\, decay or aging\, sickness and death constructively and objectively. And how we can mindfully observe\, self-investigating\, taking personal responsibility of our lives\, turn these very real human aspects in to peaceful\, joyful states which benefits our selves and others around us.
