SUMMARY:Hate at Home: Antisemitism and Why It Matters Today
DESCRIPTION:There is a rising tide of hate and polarization in America and beyond. Recently released data crimes shows hate crimes at a 16-year high\, according to the FBI. The most recent study on antisemitism by the ADL shows that the number of incidents in 2019 were the highest since they began reporting in 1979. Ohio is not immune to this current trend. \nAntisemitism on both sides of the ideological spectrum\, exhibited in new and sometimes deadly ways\, demands that communities find ways to combat it. One of the best approaches to combating it is to build allies and an understanding that hate against one group of people impacts us all. \nHate at Home: Antisemitism and Why it Matters Today explores how antisemitism has changed over time. From the Holocaust in Europe to contemporary antisemitism and hate in our own state\, be inspired to combat antisemitism and other forms of extremism in your own communities. \nThis workshop is offered through the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Cincinnati. It will be hosted by the Interfaith Center at Miami University. \nRegister Now: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hate-at-home-antisemitism-and-why-it-matters-today-tickets-146983025185?aff=erelpanelorg

SUMMARY:Intersectional Jewish Identities
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mijal Bitton\, Scholar in Residence at the Shalom Hartman Institute\nAndrew Rehfeld\, Ph.D.\, HUC President; Moderator \nWe often speak of American Jews in ways that elide their differences or that assume they are all Ashkenazi or white. But American Jews are characterized by vibrant ethnic and racial diversity that must be understood by those of us working to build inclusive Jewish communities. Through her sociological scholarship on Sephardic Jews in America and her own identity as a Latina immigrant\, Dr. Bitton will help us consider what is required to nourish a Jewish American diversity project that is complex\, rich\, and compelling.

SUMMARY:The Apostle Paul: A First-Century Reform Jew?
DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Joshua Garroway\, Ph.D.\, Sol and Arlene Bronstein Professor of Judaeo-Christian Studies\, Professor of Early Christianity and Second Commonwealth\, HUC/Los Angeles \nPaul’s disparagement of the Torah and his conferral of the Abrahamic covenant on Gentiles have earned him the reputation among Jews as a perfidious huckster who abandoned Judaism to create another religion. Is it possible we’ve been too hard on Paul? Might modern Jews come to see him as a loyal Jew – indeed a Jew much like ourselves?

SUMMARY:Win-Win Energy Policy for Ohio: How You Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Win-Win Energy Policy for Ohio: How You Can Help\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 21\, noon-1:30 pm over Zoom \nOhio’s energy policy is in flux\, as the legislature wrestles over bills that would either hinder or revive the progress towards clean energy and energy efficiency that was halted by HB 6. Green Umbrella’s Faith Communities Go Green Advocacy Team invites you to a webinar by policy experts from the nonpartisan Ohio Environmental Council\, with timely advice on how you can advocate effectively for clean energy in this pivotal year.  Free!  Invite everyone you know who’s committed to clean energy to register. \nTrish Demeter\, OEC Chief of Staff\, will give an overview of the bills currently in play in the General Assembly\, how to frame clean energy policy in language current legislators can endorse\, and how to build relationships with your elected officials. \nChris Tavenor\, OEC Staff Attorney\, will explain how you can change the dynamics around environmental policy by advocating for fair legislative districts. 2021 is the first year in which Ohio’s state and Congressional districts must be drawn with significant citizen input under the constitutional amendments voters passed to tackle partisan gerrymandering. \nAbout our speakers:  As OEC Chief of Staff\, Trish Demeter coordinates OEC’s policy advocacy\, government relations\, and legal strategies on energy\, land\, and water issues. She previously served as OEC’s Vice President for Energy Policy\, leading its efforts to reduce carbon pollution from the electric sector and to promote clean energy solutions across the state.  Before joining OEC she served as legislative liaison for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and as a policy aide in the Ohio Senate. \nChris Tavenor co-manages OEC’s legal and policy teams’ efforts to ensure clean air\, clean water\, and clean energy for Ohio. He directs OEC’s Emerging Leaders program to engage young professionals in efforts to combat climate change\, and coordinates OEC’s annual Ohio Public Interest Law Conference. \nClick Here to Register.
