SUMMARY:Modern Day Abolitionism: Mass Incarceration and Racial Justice (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:Incarceration inflicts short- and long-term harms on the lives of those incarcerated as well as their loved ones and communities. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center\, in partnership with the National Civil Rights Museum and Families Against Mandatory Minimums\, is examining the role race plays in mass incarceration in an upcoming virtual discussion. Modern Day Abolition: Mass Incarceration and Racial Justice brings together a panel of experts to discuss the range of collateral consequences of criminal conviction\, including impediments to the restoration of rights\, lingering social stigma and barriers to reentry into society. The panel will also break down the impact of incarceration on families\, including on children of current and formerly incarcerated parents.

SUMMARY:The Disneyfication of Climate Crisis: Frozen and Moana Through the Lens of Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:Disney’s recent princess films Moana (2016)\, Frozen (2013)\, and Frozen 2 (2019) cast the primary antagonist as climate change. These films solve their respective climate issues through love for oneself\, one’s family\, and the environment. Grounding our analysis in ecocriticism in children’s literature\, Disney’s marketing of the films\, and their material culture\, we argue that these new princess films can offer young viewers an introduction to issues of global warming\, but do not wholeheartedly follow through on their ecocritical promise. \nSara Austin is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University in Ohio. Her interest in race\, gender\, and childhood identity has yielded articles in Transformative Works and Cultures\, The Lion and the Unicorn\, The Looking Glass: New Perspectives in Children’s Literature\, and The Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics. Her current research explores monstrosity as a cultural metaphor for child identity. \nEmily Midkiff teaches children’s literature\, YA literature\, and reading instruction at the University of North Dakota. Her research interests include children’s and YA media\, speculative fiction\, and visual storytelling. In her forthcoming book about science fiction for young children\, she presents the results of her interdisciplinary studies on the genre and the young people who read it. \nRegister Now: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-disneyfication-of-climate-crisis-tickets-149072444695?aff=erelpanelorg

SUMMARY:Roundtable Conversation: Navigating Difference in South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Join our featured youth speakers from Pakistan and India for an hour-long conversation about their unique experiences being in dialogue across lines of difference. What surprised them about what they encountered in these dialogues? What did they notice about others\, and what did they notice about themselves? SUMMARY:Modern Science and Spirituality: Mystery as Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:The concepts of paradox and mystery lie at the heart of both modern scientific thought and contemplative spirituality. The deeper we dig into the physical universe\, the more astonishing and incomprehensible it becomes\, and the more we are confronted with mystery. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. George Wolfe brings together believers and nonbelievers around the concept of mystery while at the same time\, exploring the rich symbolism and wisdom that is found in the ancient religious texts. His presentation will also focus on cross-cultural themes\, symbols\, parables and teachings the great world religions share. \nGeorge Wolfe is author of Meditations on Mystery: Science\, Paradox and Contemplative Spirituality which is published by Dignity Press. \nRegister Now: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/modern-science-and-spirituality-mystery-as-common-ground-with-george-wolfe-tickets-151995168641

SUMMARY:Hate at Home: Antisemitism and Why It Matters Today
DESCRIPTION:There is a rising tide of hate and polarization in America and beyond. Recently released data crimes shows hate crimes at a 16-year high\, according to the FBI. The most recent study on antisemitism by the ADL shows that the number of incidents in 2019 were the highest since they began reporting in 1979. Ohio is not immune to this current trend. \nAntisemitism on both sides of the ideological spectrum\, exhibited in new and sometimes deadly ways\, demands that communities find ways to combat it. One of the best approaches to combating it is to build allies and an understanding that hate against one group of people impacts us all. \nHate at Home: Antisemitism and Why it Matters Today explores how antisemitism has changed over time. From the Holocaust in Europe to contemporary antisemitism and hate in our own state\, be inspired to combat antisemitism and other forms of extremism in your own communities. \nThis workshop is offered through the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Cincinnati. It will be hosted by the Interfaith Center at Miami University. \nRegister Now: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hate-at-home-antisemitism-and-why-it-matters-today-tickets-146983025185?aff=erelpanelorg

SUMMARY:Intersectional Jewish Identities
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mijal Bitton\, Scholar in Residence at the Shalom Hartman Institute\nAndrew Rehfeld\, Ph.D.\, HUC President; Moderator \nWe often speak of American Jews in ways that elide their differences or that assume they are all Ashkenazi or white. But American Jews are characterized by vibrant ethnic and racial diversity that must be understood by those of us working to build inclusive Jewish communities. Through her sociological scholarship on Sephardic Jews in America and her own identity as a Latina immigrant\, Dr. Bitton will help us consider what is required to nourish a Jewish American diversity project that is complex\, rich\, and compelling.
