SUMMARY:Learn Ways to Lower Your Congregation's Facilities Utility Bills
DESCRIPTION:The Faith Communities Go Green Facilities Group is hosting an event for the religious community\, June 7th at 7pm to 8:30pm  \nLearn Ways to Lower Your Congregation’s Facilities Utility Bills\, for professional advice on how to lower your house of worship’s utility bills and carbon footprint.  Speakers will explain the different types of energy audits\, how to know which one is right for your facility\, how to develop a plan from simple do-it-yourself projects to changing light fixtures to installing renewable technology. You also will hear about funding options for nonprofit institutions. This educational program is designed for house of worship executive directors\, maintenance supervisors and congregational members. \nAll faith traditions hold care of the natural world as an important part of their doctrine.  Research shows that responsibility to care for the natural world\, a moral and ethical issue\, is best addressed within faith communities. Last summer several like-minded people of various faiths got together to organize a new organization in the Greater Cincinnati area.  The purpose of our new organization\, Faith Communities Go Green\, one of Green Umbrella’s new impact teams\, is to unite all faith communities in the tri-state area to work collaboratively to address the climate crisis and environmental justice. \nThis webinar will guide your faith community to walk the talk to care for creation. \nRegister for the free zoom webinar\, June 7th from 7:00 to 8:30pm at:  Learn How to Lower Your Facilities Utility Bills  \nFind more information about us at: greenumbrella.org/faith/

SUMMARY:Racism is a Public Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:YWCA STAND AGAINST RACISM panel discussion \nMay 27th – 9:00 to 10:00 am \nJoin us as we explore and discuss local health disparities and policy efforts you can support! \nCenturies of structural racism in our country have had a profound negative impact on communities of color\, affecting people’s access to quality housing\, education\, food\, transportation\, political power\, and other social determinants of health. In response\, Cincinnati and Hamilton County have both officially declared racism a public health crisis. This is a powerful first step! \nUnderstanding and addressing systemic racism from this public health perspective is crucial to eliminating racial and ethnic inequities\, and to improving opportunity and well-being across communities. Our local experts will provide a clearer understanding and tools you can use to work toward a more equitable world.

SUMMARY:Innocence and the Push for Abolishing Ohio's Death Penalty
DESCRIPTION:Ohio’s death penalty is broken. In fact\, 11 innocent people have been sentenced to death in our state. The good news? SB 103 and HB 183 would abolish Ohio’s death penalty and would prevent putting any more innocent lives at risk. \nJoin the Intercommunity Community Justice and Peace Center and the Ohio Innocence Project as we welcome Derrick Jamison\, a Cincinnati native who spent 20 years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. Senator Cecil Thomas (D-9) and Representative Jean Schmidt (R-65) will join this virtual panel to explain why the time is now to repeal the death penalty. We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday\, May 26 at 7 pm.

SUMMARY:The Disneyfication of Climate Crisis: Frozen and Moana Through the Lens of Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:Disney’s recent princess films Moana (2016)\, Frozen (2013)\, and Frozen 2 (2019) cast the primary antagonist as climate change. These films solve their respective climate issues through love for oneself\, one’s family\, and the environment. Grounding our analysis in ecocriticism in children’s literature\, Disney’s marketing of the films\, and their material culture\, we argue that these new princess films can offer young viewers an introduction to issues of global warming\, but do not wholeheartedly follow through on their ecocritical promise. \nSara Austin is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University in Ohio. Her interest in race\, gender\, and childhood identity has yielded articles in Transformative Works and Cultures\, The Lion and the Unicorn\, The Looking Glass: New Perspectives in Children’s Literature\, and The Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics. Her current research explores monstrosity as a cultural metaphor for child identity. \nEmily Midkiff teaches children’s literature\, YA literature\, and reading instruction at the University of North Dakota. Her research interests include children’s and YA media\, speculative fiction\, and visual storytelling. In her forthcoming book about science fiction for young children\, she presents the results of her interdisciplinary studies on the genre and the young people who read it. \nRegister Now: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-disneyfication-of-climate-crisis-tickets-149072444695?aff=erelpanelorg
