SUMMARY:The Social Practice of Human Rights Conference
DESCRIPTION:“We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth.”\nU.S. President John F. Kennedy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA quarter-century removed from the September 11 attacks\, a new generation knows only the dread and despair that dominate the narrative of now. Authoritarian governance\, climate collapse\, and techno-dystopia recalibrate a reality once set on the promise of tomorrow. Human rights and democracy face unprecedented existential threats. Legal foundations fray under bombardment while illiberal forces celebrate cruelty. Nation-states retreat from cooperation with others\, looking inward and backward for scapegoats and excuses. \nWhat’s worse\, the mechanics we have to build new futures have themselves been endangered and hacked. Local law enforcement chills free expression and violates the rights of assembly with military-grade gear\, immigration enforcement is weaponized to punish political opposition\, and terrorism statutes outlaw  protest across continents. From heightened digital authoritarianism in East Asia to the suppression of civil society in parts of Africa\, the criminalization of social movements across the Americas\, and the tightening grip on media in Eastern Europe and Central Asia\, threats to the basic freedoms of democracy are everywhere. Documentation could be deep-faked while malignant algorithms surveil and shape online communities. Reliable philanthropic resources are evaporating at the very moment when investment in movement infrastructure is so essential. \nThese are difficult times\, but a shift is underway. \nAmidst this contracting civic space\, a powerful counter-narrative is emerging. From mural movements and punk protests to indigenous artistic revivals\, from digital memorials and silent theater to TikTok activism and algorithmic subversion\, social movements are redefining the very act of resistance and actively defending fundamental human rights in powerfully creative ways. These movements are at the forefront of protecting the rights to assembly\, association\, belief\, opinion\, free expression\, and dissent – all indispensable pillars of a healthy democracy. In this hostile environment\, artistic expression and digital technologies have not merely become modes of activism and advocacy; they are now urgent tools for preserving democratic space\, directly challenging structural violence\, and amplifying marginalized voices. This convening of social movement scholars and practitioners of human rights links directly to the defense of democracy as a core objective. \nIn this spirit\, the Human Rights Center at the University of Dayton will convene the 2026 Social Practice of Human Rights (SPHR) conference to center this critical conjuncture. As the weight of disinformation\, militarization\, and belligerent politics bears down\, communities are demonstrating remarkable adaptability. They are innovating\, finding new ways to speak truth to power\, to organize effective movements\, and to reclaim public discourse. From the poignant street art that bears witness to state violence to the encrypted messaging apps that enable safe mobilization\, the convergence of art and technology is fundamentally reshaping the architecture of protest and the defense of democratic ideals. \nSPHR26 will take place on April 9-11 at the University of Dayton in Dayton\, Ohio. #SPHR26 is planned as a hybrid event experience at this time. Virtual\, as well as some in-person participation\, is envisioned.

SUMMARY:FCGG Book Club: Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks\, One-Tenth of an Acre\, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City
DESCRIPTION:Join Faith Communities Good Green on Thursday\, November 20\, 2025 at 7:00pm to 8:30pm ET \nDiscussion facilitated by Mimi Rook \nBook: Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks\, One-Tenth of an Acre\, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City \nby  Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates \nLIVE ON ZOOM \nREGISTER HERE \nWhen Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates moved into a duplex in a run-down part of Holyoke\, Massachusetts\, the tenth-of-an-acre lot was barren ground and bad soil\, peppered with broken pieces of concrete\, asphalt\, and brick. The two friends got to work designing what would become not just another urban farm\, but a “permaculture paradise” replete with perennial broccoli\, paw paws\, bananas\, and moringa—all told\, more than two hundred low-maintenance edible plants in an innovative food forest on a small city lot. The garden—intended to function like a natural ecosystem with the plants themselves providing most of the garden’s needs for fertility\, pest control\, and weed suppression—also features an edible water garden\, a year-round unheated greenhouse\, tropical crops\, urban poultry\, and even silkworms. \nIn telling the story of Paradise Lot\, Toensmeier explains the principles and practices of permaculture\, the choice of exotic and unusual food plants\, the techniques of design and cultivation\, and\, of course\, the adventures\, mistakes\, and do-overs in the process. Packed full of detailed\, useful information about designing a highly productive permaculture garden\, Paradise Lot is also a funny and charming story of two single guys\, both plant nerds\, with a wild plan: to realize the garden of their dreams and meet women to share it with. Amazingly\, on both counts\, they succeed.

SUMMARY:THE COLLARS OF RBG: Photographs of Elinor Carucci
DESCRIPTION:A month after the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933–2020)\, award-winning Israeli-American photographer Elinor Carucci (b. 1971) was hired by Time magazine to photograph the collars of RBG as a commemorative piece. The twenty-five neckpieces captured in these photographs offer insight into RBG’s legacy. Each one\, whether bold\, ornate\, or subversive\, is a powerful point of entry for exploring Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life and her tireless work on America’s highest court. The stories behind these collars honor the lives she touched\, the freedoms she defended\, and the Supreme Court opinions that changed the course of history. Complementing Carucci’s photographs is a selection of jewelry and amulets from the collections of Hebrew Union College’s Skirball Museum. Like the collars\, these objects of material culture explore the societal and religious aspects of adornment throughout history. \nHours: Tuesday and Thursday 11am–3pm\, Sunday 1–4pm\nAdmission: Free\nTours/Information: awheeler@huc.edu or 513.487.3231 \nPhotographs copyright ©2023 by Elinor Carucci. SUMMARY:The Provocation: Practicing Prophetic Imagination
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a day of walking\, reflecting\, and imagining what’s possible. \nWe’ll gather in Cincinnati to honor Walter Brueggemann—not just with words\, but by living into the kind of disruptive hope he spent a lifetime teaching. \nWe’ll start at Clifton United Methodist Church. From there\, you’ll head out on a self-guided Walkabout through the Clifton neighborhood. Walter’s voice will guide the journey\, provoking reflection and reconnecting you with the central ideas in The Prophetic Imagination. \nAfter the Walkabout\, we’ll come back together for a Talkabout—an open\, facilitated conversation in small and large groups. Expect a mix of storytelling\, honest grappling\, and shared insight. We’ll conclude with a participatory ritual of remembrance. It won’t be a formal service or static tribute. It’ll be a living act of community—music\, reflection\, and creative expression that puts Walter’s legacy into motion\, together. \nAt the heart of it all is this guiding quote: \n“The prophets dared us to reenact their poetry in our community. They do not give us explanations; they give us provocations. They disrupt despair and denial by insisting there is an alternative world being spoken into being.” \n— Walter Brueggemann \nThis day is an invitation to dare\, to imagine\, and to embody that alternative world.

SUMMARY:Curiocrafters (Youth opportunity)
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, WordPlay is collaborating with Friends for Good to host a weekly event for youth\, ages 12-18. Do you know about this amazing organization? It was founded in 2012 to give young people a safe\, inclusive\, and inspiring place to come together\, uncover and share personal narratives\, and determine how their creativity and voices contribute to a more just and equitable community. \nHow amazing does that sound? And how similar to what we do at Friends for Good! Rather than be in competition with our friends at WordPlay\, we’re joining forces to provide a unique experience for teens and tweens every Thursday from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.\, starting June 12th. It’s called “Curiocrafters\,” and our young friends will be able to express themselves through a number of creative means. It will be a place for color\, crafts\, and fun! A newly donated PlayStation 5 will be on-site too for the gamers. \nCURIOCRAFTERS \nEvery Thursday beginning June 12th \nAges 12-18 \n12pm-3pm \n@ WordPlay \n1556 Chae Ave \nCincinnati\, OH 45223 \nTo learn more and register\, click here
